Abstract

In this text will be discussed the cognitive aspects involved in the use of adversative items in Portuguese. The item “mas” will be focused on, and it can be considered the prototypical adversative conjunction in the language. The main goal is to present reflections which can aid the teacher of Portuguese in the classes of reading and text production.
