    Nutritional counseling for a breast cancer patient, including Brazilian Green Propolis supplementation : a case report.

    The case study reports on nutritional counseling the use of nutritional supplement of Brazilian Green Propolis for a patient with breast cancer. Treatment with green propolis was given to improve the nutritional status of the patient and also reduce the symptoms caused by chemotherapy. Marker values decreased and chemotherapy side effect symptoms were alleviated. The green propolis was effective as adjuvant therapy and improved the quality of life of the patient during the treatment period. News clinical trials should be performed to determine the best Brazilian green propolis concentrations for the treatment of other types of cancer at different stages of progression.

    Fournier’s syndrome : a case report at Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

    Fournier’s syndrome is a rare necrotizing fasciitis characterized by acute beginning and fulminant progression to sepsis. Treatment includes surgical approach and antibiotic therapy. This study present the case of a 47-year-old woman who was admitted with a diagnosis of septic shock secondary to Fournier syndrome. A surgical approach was performed on admission and antibiotic therapy was started. During hospitalization an antibiotic (ATB) exchange was required. The patient evolved with increased levels of C-reactive protein and pro-calcitonin and the need for hemodialysis. This case report discuss Fournier’s syndrome, the relationship with laboratory markers, and the effect of ATB on peripheral tissues.

    Natural compounds in edible plants that modify the nervous and cardiovascular functions.

    Edible plants contain essential metals, vitamins, carbohydrates and other nutrientes that are essential for growth of the human body and to provide sufficient energy for its biochemical and physiological performance. However, some edible plants contain phytocompounds that change the functioning of the central nervous system and vascular functions, even when ingested in quantities, insufficient to cause visible signs or symptoms in the short or medium term. The objective of this work was to investigate data related to compounds in edible plants that influence the functioning of the nervous and cardiovascular system. Open free databases were consulted searching on edible plants and its derivatives that present activity on nervous and cardiovascular functions. Methylxanthines, tryptamines, tropanes, phenylethylamines, ergot alkaloids and the compounds capsaycin, safrole, myristin, cathinone, dioscorine, glyrrhizin and thujone were considered in this review. Phytocompounds in edible plants can increase symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, irritability, depression or anxiety and/or cardiovascular disturbes in susceptible individuals. The detection of these phytocompounds or its metabolites in urine by HPLC or other high- efficiency chromatographic methods increase the efficiency of the diagnosis of health disorders in these susceptible individuals.

    Antioxidant activity, sensory analysis and acceptability of red fruit juice supplemented with Brazilian green propolis.

    In this work were determining the total phenolic content, total flavonoids and antioxidant capacity in formulations of red fruit juice supplemented with different concentrations of aqueous extract of Brazilian green propolis. And, also was investigate the formulation sensory acceptance by volunteers’ consumers. The addition of propolis to red fruit juice increased the content of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids, enhanced the antioxidant activity of the final product as assessed by radical scavenging DPPH and ABTS and FRAP methods, and no negative effect on consumer taste. All red fruit juice formulations containing propolis presented significant results through overall acceptability test and were approved in relation to purchase intent by the volunteer consumers. Formulation F3 (6.1 mg.mL-1) showed the best results. The antioxidant activity increment was proportional to the concentration of aqueous green propolis extracts added to the juice. The positive purchase intention reached up 64.75% of participants’ acceptance. A new, sugar-free drink with pleasurable sensory and functional properties, combined with health benefits, has been obtained.

    Preparation of methodological systematic reviews in nutrition science.

    Systematically gathering scientific evidence is necessary to build and support safe concepts, treatments, and effective actions for health practice, policies, and recommendations in the field of nutrition. This didactic guide aimed to compile the steps necessary for a methodological systematic review in nutrition through real examples including the mandatory stages of conduct such as preparation of the central question, search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, data collection, extraction of information, and methodological quality analysis of the studies. The article demonstrates that methodological systematic reviews are valuable to track the progress of concepts and practices. In this way, knowledge of the review process is important for the advancement of the field, and reviews are important resources for scientific information due to their synthesis of current evidence.

    Correlations among neck circumference and anthropometric indicators to estimate body adiposity in people living with HIV.

    Neck circumference (NC) and anthropometric data of people living with HIV (PLWH) are correlated. Methods: Socioeconomic, NC, body mass index (BMI), tricipital skinfold thickness (TSF), mid-arm circumference (MAC), mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference (HC) data of 72 PLWH were correlated. Results: Higher adiposity was observed in NC (40.3% [n=29]) and WC (31.9% [n=23]). Correlations between NC/BMI, NC/WC, NC/HC, NC/MAC, NC/MAMC, and NC/WHtR were significant. Increased NC (40.3%[n=29]) and WC (31.9 [n=23]) were associated with higher cardiometabolic risk. Conclusions: NC correlations are adequate for estimating cardiometabolic risk.

    Oficinas culinárias aumentam a ingestão de fibras e melhoram o estado emocional e a qualidade de vida de pacientes diabéticos?

    Introdução: Diabetes mellitus é uma doença metabólica de evolução crônica que pode resultar em complicações clínicas e prejuízos multidimensionais no estado emocional e na qualidade de vida dos pacientes. Objetivo: Comparar a ingestão de fibras dietéticas, o estado emocional e a qualidade de vida de diabéticos participantes e não participantes de oficinas culinárias. Métodos: Estudo observacional descritivo realizado em Ambulatório pertencente a uma universidade pública da Região dos Inconfidentes, Minas Gerais, com pacientes com diabetes mellitus do tipo 2, de ambos os sexos. As avaliações da ingestão dietética de fibras, estado emocional e qualidade de vida foram realizadas através da aplicação do recordatório de 24 horas, escala B-PAID e WHOQOL-BREF, respectivamente. Dados foram analisados pelo software Stata®, versão 13.0. Resultados: Ao total, 22 diabéticos tipo 2 participaram deste estudo, alocados em dois grupos: grupo 1 (G1) participantes de oficinas culinárias (n=11) e grupo 2 (G2) não participantes das oficinas culinárias (n=11). A média do consumo de fibras dietéticas foi de 24,6 g para o G1 e 19,7g para o G2 (p<0.01). Quanto ao escore de avaliação do estado emocional, observou-se que os participantes de oficinas culinárias obtiveram 11,7 pontos e não participantes 30,7 pontos (p<0.01). Participantes de oficinas culinárias relataram qualidade de vida “boa” em 81,8% dos casos em detrimento de 18,2% dos não participantes das oficinas culinárias (p=0.013). Conclusão: Os diabéticos participantes das oficinas culinárias relataram maior ingestão de fibras, melhores estado emocional e qualidade de vida de pacientes diabéticos.

    Desenvolvimento dos primeiros sinais clínicos de alterações da gordura corporal em pessoas vivendo com o HIV : revisão integrativa da literatura.

    A lipodistrofia é um dos diversos problemas metabólicos associados à infecção pelo Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Vem sendo associada ao estigma social, ao abandono da terapia antirretroviral (TARV) e ao consequente aumento da morbimortalidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi responder a pergunta norteadora “Qual a incidência da lipodistrofia e o tempo médio dos primeiros sinais clínicos em pessoas vivendo com o HIV?” através da revisão integrativa realizada na Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Literatura Internacional em Ciências da Saúde (PubMed) e com a utilização dos seguintes descritores: Lipodystrophy, HIV-Associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome, Body Fat Distribution, Intra-Abdominal Fat, Abdominal Fat, Subcutaneous Fat, Fat Body, Adipose Tissue, Adiposity, Incidence, Epidemiology, HIV, AIDS. Após o crivo metodológico, sete estudos foram selecionados entre os anos de 2002 e 2014. Na síntese dos resultados encontrados, constatou-se que, após 12 meses de TARV, 19,7% dos pacientes avaliados pelos estudos apresentaram lipoatrofia e 27,25% apresentaram lipohipertrofia. A incidência da lipodistrofia mista foi avaliada por apenas um dos estudos, com taxa de incidência de 13 a cada 100 indivíduos avaliados. Segundo os estudos encontrados por esta revisão, os primeiros sinais da lipodistrofia podem aparecer no período de 1 ano de avaliação clínica após exposição a TARV. Estes dados sugerem que a redistribuição de gordura pode ser uma condição aguda associada à infecção pelo HIV.

    Canine visceral leishmaniasis : detection of Leishmania spp. genome in peripheral blood of seropositive dogs by real-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR).

    Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonosis caused by the protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Among the species, L. infantum and/or L. infantum (chagasi) are the most important species affecting the Americas. Domestic dogs are the main reservoir of the parasite and participate effectively in the parasite' transmission cycle. The Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis Control Program (PCLV) adopted in Brazil present as strategies the vector control, health education and serological diagnosis of CVL in dogs followed by culling of the seropositive ones. The resolution to eliminate seropositive dogs by euthanasia, when necessary, are the most controversial and least accepted by society. The diagnostic methods for canine visceral leishmaniasis, currently indicated and approved in Brazil by the Ministry of Health from Brazil are the Dual Path Platform (DPP)® as a screening test and the Enzyme immunoassay test (ELISA®). This study aimed to verify the presence of Leishmania spp. DNA in peripheral blood samples of dogs presenting positive serological results byDPP® and ELISA® tests,throughreal-time polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR), using the pair of primers 150–152 already described. For this purpose, were collected blood samples from 185 seropositive dogs among them, 41 (22%) exhibited some clinical signal of disease, whereas 144 (78%) was asymptomatic. The animals were also analyzed according to gender, race and hair size. According to the results of rt-PCR, it was observed that among the185 seropositive dogs analyzed, only 132 (71%) presented positive results for CVL and 53 (29%) presented negative results. From this, 41/41 symptomatic dogs were positive (100%), while among the asymptomatic dogs, 91/144 were positive (63, 2%) and 53/144 were negative (36, 8%). Concerning the hair size of seropositive dogs, we found that 41 (22%) had long hair, while 144 (78%) had short hair. No statistical significance occurred between the results of rt-PCR, ELISA and DPP tests and the profile of the animals (gender, size of the dogs and hair size), probably due to the small number of samples and the sampling differences of each profile. But statistical significance occurred between the results of rt-PCR and the clinical evaluation, since the rt-PCR was positive in all symptomatic dogs. Thus, through these results, we reached at the following question, which may contribute to an important current debate: the dogs presenting CVL seropositive diagnosis confirmed by tests distributed by the Ministry of Health were in reality ill or were they seropositive by living in an endemic area of the disease? Would these asymptomatic seropositive dogs spread the disease to the inhabitants even presenting a low parasite charge circulating in the blood.

    Teste de aceitabilidade de macarrão espaguete ao alho e óleo coccionado em forno combinado e fogão convencional.

    Macarrão é um alimento apreciado e consumido pela população brasileira devido ao fácil preparo e viabilidade econômica. Porém, o preparo do macarrão em panelões à vapor gera perdas do produto, resultando em alto fator de correção e fora dos padrões de identidade e qualidade (PIQ), situação esta que pode ser minimizada pelo uso do forno combinado. Forno combinado é um equipamento proveniente da evolução e junção do forno de convecção com o forno a vapor. Este possui cinco funções diferentes: regeneração, banho-maria, vapor limpo, ar seco e combinado, que propiciam diversas possibilidades de cocção. Soma-se a economia de tempo e espaço, superior conservação do aspecto e sabor dos alimentos e diminuição da perda de matéria prima no preparo. Sendo assim, na produção de refeições coletivas, as empresas visam a qualidade do produto desde sua produção até consumo, podem otimizar os processos de produção e elevar a qualidade do produto final. Um dos métodos para se comprovar a eficácia e vantagens do forno combinado, é o teste de aceitabilidade (escala hedônica de nove pontos). Realizamos um teste com 45 voluntários que mostrou uma melhor aceitabilidade da cocção pelo forno combinado e analisamos as vantagens econômicas deste método.
