Item Supply chain network design : a case study of the regional facilities analysis for a 3D printing company.(2022) Sá, Brena Carvalho de; Souza, Erick Henrique Dutra de; Reis, Luciana Paula; Dutra, Michael David de Souza3D printing supply chain network. The objective is to analyze regional facility configurations in order to lower investment risks for an organization that aims to provide additive manufacturing The growing 3D printing market can be an attraction for investment in new businesses, which may entail strategic planning for new ventures. This paper presents a case study of designing a services for orthopedic and dental prostheses production. To this end, the competitive environment, the aggregating factor and logistic costs, tariffs and tax incentives, regional demand, political factors, the value of currency, and the demand uncertainty are analyzed. The results indicate that the adopted framework for network design decisions effectively allows the analysis of regional facility configuration. It also suggests that there are no hindering factors to the implementation of a 3D printing service company. In the region studied, there are fiscal incentives of more than 60% for taxes on the movement of goods between municipalities, which can be an advantage when locating facilities outside the capital. Competitors are well qualified, but there is room for new companies focused on quality and price, which may be a case for specialized products such as protheses. The estimated demand ranges from 146 to 509 units per month, which may be an opportunity for a new entrant given the few additive manufacturing ventures identified in the region.Item Impact assessment of lean product development and lean startup methodology on information technology startups' performance.(2021) Reis, Luciana Paula; Fernandes, June Marques; Barreto, Ezequiel Junior; Lima, Mayana Virginia Viegas; Armellini, FabianoThis research aims to evaluate the impact of lean product development (LPD) and lean startup (LS) practices on startup performance. A survey with 114 responses from Brazilian startups in the Information Technology sector evaluated the direct e®ects of LPD and LS on organizational performance, as well as the potential cross-e®ects between them. The assumptions were validated using a structural equation modeling for data analysis, which con ̄rms that the adoption of these methodologies has a positive signi ̄cant impact on startup performance, especially the practices involving teamwork and the design of minimum viable products.Item Leveraging a process-oriented perspective on frugal innovation through the linkage of lean product development (LPD) practices and waste.(2021) Reis, Luciana Paula; Fernandes, June Marques; Armellini, FabianoFrugal innovation aims to attain signi ̄cantly cheaper solutions on the market. The literature points out a lack of studies addressing frugal innovation from a process-oriented (ex-ante) perspective, as well as how to structure and leverage the frugal product development process. This paper explores how lean principles and fundamentals, and more particularly lean product development (LPD) can help ̄ll this gap. The incidence of di®erent types of waste has been observed throughout the new product development (NPD) process, and their mitigation could certainly leverage frugal innovation from the process perspective. However, to operationalize waste mitigation, an evaluation of how di®erent types of waste are related to the various existing LPD practices is necessary. We accordingly build a relationship matrix between LPD practices and waste mitigation throughout the NPD process, based on a literature review encompassing 310 studies. By correlating LPD practices and waste, this paper proposes and discusses a conceptual model that brings insights to understanding how LPD can drive frugal innovations from an ex-ante perspective. The contributions of this paper are the categorization and classi ̄cation of waste within NPD; the assessment and classi ̄cation of the lean practices most studied in the literature; the association of the categories of waste with the corresponding lean practices; and the discussion of the possible contribution of LPD literature to leverage frugal innovation from a process-oriented perspective.Item The impacts of the lack of ergonomic vision in mining equipment design projects on the health of workers in the maintenance sector.(2021) Santos, Aparício Afonso dos; Reis, Luciana PaulaThis study aims to analyze the impacts of the lack of ergonomic view in the projects of equipment design on workers’ health from the maintenance sector, in the mining industry context. To understand the operators’ health, maintenance activities of three types of equipment were analyzed: pump, crusher and sieve. The methodological strategy of Ergonomic Analysis of the Workplace (EWA) was used. Thus, changes in these activities are required, since some postures adopted for their performance were considered severe and with high risk. Bearing weight above the shoulders and uncomfortable positions are conditions resulted from failures in the equipment designs. To alleviate the problem, it is suggested the adoption of innovative tools or the creation of new supportive devices to improve working conditions of these maintenance professionals.Item Application of quality function deployment as an integrative method to knowledge management implementation.(2022) Reis, Luciana Paula; Fernandes, June Marques; Silva, Sergio Evangelista; Pereira, Alana Deusilan SesterKnowledge Management Implementation (KMI) can be analysed from three perspectives: Knowledge Management System (KMS) implementation, Knowledge Management Processes (KMPs) implementation and Organisational Outcomes (OO). Quality Function Deployment (QFD), conceived within the scope of quality, represents a method capable of bringing signi ̄cant contributions to the knowledge ̄eld of KMI. The QFD method stands out as a comprehensive approach to improve the quality of products and services, focussing on customer requirements. The literature presents a scarcity of studies that discuss the KMI implementation process, addressing these three perspectives. Furthermore, studies that address QFD in the context of KM are more focussed on the KMS implementation perspective. In this context, this research proposes an innovative approach adopting QFD in order to structure the KMI, encompassing the three perspectives presented (KMS implementation, KMP implementation and OO). In this context, QFD is seen as a method of integrating and operationalising KMI activities. To validate this approach, we applied the case study in an academic support department at a Brazilian public university. As a result, it was possible to verify that the QFD helps in the operationalisation of the KMS and KMP and also improves OO. Still, it was observed that the approach to knowledge management seems to be easy to apply in the academic setting and has produced good results in the service o®ered in the department where it was applied.Item Knowledge management in public services : a model applied in a public university.(2019) Fernandes, June Marques; Pereira, Alana Deusilan Sester; Reis, Luciana Paula; Silva, Sergio EvangelistaKnowledge Management (KM) is a fundamental process for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of organisations, there are few articles that address KM in service environments, especially those in the sphere of public administration. This current situation poses an important gap between the KM in public settings. While in firms the KM practices should be guided to the necessity of firm obtain profits and generate value clients who pay for its products, in public services social wellbeing is the main purpose. In light of this possibility of contributing to the KM literature, in this article we propose a methodology for KM to improve public services. Through an essentially qualitative approach we adopted the case study method to collect data in administrative department in a public university. As a result, it was proposed the knowledge management model to public services settings.Item A knowledge taxonomy in the context of organizational routines : an study in a public university.(2019) Silva, Sergio Evangelista; Reis, Luciana Paula; Pereira, Alana Deusilan Sester; Fernandes, June MarquesKnowledge is one of the most important assets in organizations. While there are several studies about knowledge management, there are few texts dedicated to classifying the existing types of knowledge in the organizational context. As such, the concept of knowledge is still overlooked in the organizational literature. Hence, this situation poses a dilemma: how could a thing that is not well understood to be adequately managed? Drawing on current knowledge taxonomies and the organizational routines concept, we address this gap by outlining a taxonomy of how knowledge manifests in the execution and structuration of organizational routines. This taxonomy is generated through the grounding process of examining the organizational routines of an academic department in a public university. As the main result, there are proposed four basic types of knowledge: stable-reproducible, problem-solving, incremental-shift, and paradigmatic-shift. As the main theoretical contribution, this paper introduces a knowledge taxonomy, which is an alternative view of the current taxonomies. As a practical implication, these four types of knowledge presented suggests the necessity of the development of specific knowledge management practices for each type of knowledge.Item Planning technological businesses : a study of market positioning and the value chain.(FERNANDES, J. The business model refers to 10 technological projects. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: The paper attempts to empirically validate the model proposed by Reis, Ladeira, and Fernandes (2015). In this regard, the paper facilitates the interpretation and application of concepts relevant to the business model’s definition, thereby contributing to an estimation between theory and entrepreneurial practice. Key methodological aspects: The research is qualitative and adopts an action research methodology regarding 10 participating projects of the Incentive Program for Innovation held in the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais. We conducted interviews with 38 professionals in order to understand the model’s applicability in different contexts and to assess convergences and differences between each analyzed case. Summary of key results: The model’s application proved to be relevant mainly for the early stages of business planning. The inclusion of the minimum viable product in the model helped with resource design and the development of a product with similar characteristics to market needs. It was suggested that the criteria used to assist the decision-making process were evaluated and selected by the team in accordance with the intended business strategy. Key considerations/conclusions: It is suggested that future research evaluates the inclusion of i) risk analysis and a contingency plan for the proposed business model and ii) the valuation of technology as an important step for projects that include the transfer of technology to established companies.Item Desenvolvimento de tecnologias e negócios em um programa de incentivo à inovação.(2016) Reis, Luciana Paula; Silva, Carlos Eduardo Guerra; Muniz, Reynaldo Maia; Fernandes, June MarquesO artigo analisa o desenvolvimento de tecnologias em ambiente acadêmico e a consubstanciação dessas em negócios tecnológicos, considerando-se os níveis micro, meso e macro organizacionais. Por meio da análise de conteúdo de relatórios do Programa de Incentivo à Inovação (PII), observou-se no nível micro, o foco difuso de alguns pesquisadores, que oscilam entre empreender e licenciar a tecnologia. No nível meso, foram observados os agentes que compõem o campo da inovação tecnológica, cada qual desempenhando funções específicas. Entre clientes, concorrentes, parceiros e fornecedores, os spinoffs acadêmicos operam sob regras de agências reguladoras, bem como apresentam considerável dependência financeira de agências de pesquisa e programas governamentais. No nível macro, foi constatado que disposições legais, econômicas, tecnológicas, sustentáveis e culturais da ambiência se constituem em referências que orientam a atuação dos diversos agentes de inovação. Os resultados deste estudo contribuem para a formulação e avaliação de políticas públicas e programas, bem como para a reflexão sobre práticas acadêmico-empresariais visando a inovação e desenvolvimento de tecnologias.Item O processo de estruturação de recursos no contexto de uma empresa de base tecnológica de origem acadêmica (EBTA).(2015) Silva, Sérgio Evangelista; Reis, Luciana PaulaO sucesso de uma empresa é resultado da configuração de seus recursos e da forma com que ela os emprega de modo a produzir bens e serviços de modo eficiente, sendo estas duas dimensões denominadas estrutural e dinâmica respectivamente. Embora a literatura sobre estas duas dimensões no contexto de empresas convencionais seja vasta, este tema ainda é pouco explorado no contexto do surgimento das Empresas de Base Tecnológica de Origem Acadêmica (EBTAs). Diante desta lacuna teórica, este artigo tem como propósito analisar o processo de estruturação de recursos em uma EBTA, nas diferentes fases de desenvolvimento do negócio. Como estratégia metodológica, foi utilizado o estudo de caso em uma empresa bem sucedida, atuante no ramo de biotecnologia, em que a coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevistas individuais, o que possibilitou obter e analisar os dados concernentes ao tema, sob a ótica da Visão Baseadas nos Recursos (VBR). Para o caso estudado verificou-se que o sucesso foi resultado principalmente da reunião de conhecimentos complementares, nas áreas técnica, gerencial e mercadológica, do capital social dos fundadores, e do estabelecimento de procedimentos sistemáticos de monitoramento do ambiente. A principal contribuição deste estudo está em reconhecer elementos fundamentais para o processo de desenvolvimento dessa empresa.
