Abstract

This article presents the basic principles of the Acoustic Theory of Speech Production, also called Linear Source-filter Theory of Speech Production (FANT, 1960; KENT & READ, 1992; PICKETT, 1999). This description is justified since the theory is not available in Portuguese. This theory is useful in understanding articulatoryacoustic relationships. It may be applied to the analysis of a single language or in cross-linguistic studies. It also provides a foundation for many procedures for the acoustic analysis of speech.
