Deposits of corundum in the region of Manhuaçu–Caratinga, eastern Minas Gerais, are described in terms
of geology, economic potential, mineralogy and chemistry. The alluvial and colluvial deposits of Indaiá,
Sapucaia, Caputira and Palmeira are found within high grade metamorphic terrains, belonging to the Juiz
de Fora and Mantiqueira complexes, cut by pegmatites as well as mafic rocks. Gemmological characterization
in terms of mineral color and inclusions indicate a good economic potential as gemstone of the studied
corundum. The identification of mineral inclusions and the study of the crystal chemistry led to the
interpretation of a metamorphic origin for the corundum. The similar geology of the Manhuaçu-Caratinga
area and the region where the important ruby and sapphire deposits from Sri Lanka are found suggests that
new deposits might be discovered in the eastern region of Minas Gerais.
