Application of total quality management tools in the risk analysis of pathologies in steel-structured buildings.
(2022) Hofmann, Giane Alfenas Antunes; Souza, Henor Artur de
Structured steel construction is an interesting option to the already established concrete structure at a time when Brazilian civil construction seeks more efficiency. Encouraging the use of this material requires a better understanding of its characteristics and especially its possible pathologies to prevent degradation, costs, and even structural collapse. This study uses Total Quality Management tools are applied to analyze the pathologies present in five medium and large steel-structured buildings. The causative elements are identified with the information about the buildings’ pathologies, and the risk analysis of the pathologies is performed using, especially, the Ishikawa Diagram and the GUT Matrix. The most frequent pathologies highlighted in the study are corrosion in the structure, cracks in the closures, and infiltrations in the interface closure/structure. The main causes, according to the Ishikawa diagram and the GUT matrix, are related to construction technique, labor, environmental conditions, and raw material used. The results show that it is possible, through the tools of Quality Management, to establish the risk of each pathology and its origin and determine the degree of risk that each one offers.

The steel structure construction is an interesting option to the already established concrete structure at a time when the Brazilian civil construction seeks more efficiency. To promote the use of this material it is necessary to have a better understanding of its characteristics and, especially, of its possible pathologies, to avoid degradation, costs, and even the collapse of the structure. In this study Total Quality Management tools were applied to analyze the pathologies found in five medium and large steel-structured buildings. The most frequent ones were structure corrosion, cracks in the closures, and infiltrations in the interface closure/structure. The Ishikawa Diagram is used to identify the origin of the causes of pathologies and the Gravity Urgency Tendency Matrix (GUT Matrix) is used inthe risk analysis of each pathology. The results obtained show that it is possible, through these Quality Management tools, to understand the origin of the pathologies, establishing their dangerousness and the degree of risk each one offers.

The importance of underpaint corrosion caused by damage to paint on steel structures.
(2020) Ribeiro Filho, Guido Lessa; Ribas, Rovadávia Aline de Jesus; Paula, Geraldo Donizetti de
The impact of varying the dry paint film thickness (DFT) on the underpaint corrosion of steel plates obtained from the floor of an offshore oil platform is evaluated. The specimens were all prepared using the same material and paint scheme, and the DFT and exposure conditions in a salt spray chamber were varied and compared with the results obtained in a real situation. The results indicated that corrosion initiated at sites where the paint was damaged, may be more important than corrosion through the undamaged paint due to permeation, even in cases where the DFT is thin. In specimens whose substrates were previously damaged, there were pathological manifestations of osmotic blistering. The underpaint corrosion that occurred after the paint was damaged in the field occurred at an intensity like that observed for the tested specimens.

Numerical analysis of composite steel-concrete columns of arbitrary cross section.
(2005) Sousa Junior, João Batista Marques de; Caldas, Rodrigo Barreto
This paper presents a numerical formulation for the nonlinear analysis of slender steel-concrete composite columns of generic cross-sectional shape, subjected to axial force and biaxial bending. The cross section is defined in terms of a number of closed polygonal loops of a specific material, each one with its own stress-strain relation, with reinforcement bars embedded in the polygons. The material and geometrically nonlinear equlibrium problem is solved by the finite element method, with displacement-based stress resultant beamcolumn elements. The proposed scheme turns possible, with a unified treatment, to perform analyses of concrete-filled steel tubes, fully or partially encased steel profiles, or less usual cross sections present on composite construction. The robustness and accuracy of the formulation is verified against numerical and experimental results available in the literature.

Analysis of fatigue in the weld of the joints in the fixed offshore platforms.
(2013) Taier, Roberto; Araújo, Ernani Carlos de; Godefroid, Leonardo Barbosa
Four tubular joints of a fixed offshore platform are modelled using finite elements to evaluate respective fatigue lives and comparison with the results obtained from conventional models in frame elements. Stress concentration factors (SCF’s) calculated from parametric formulas are also compared with those obtained from finite elements models. The results of this work have the intention of verifying the validity of the refinement of fatigue analysis on critical joints of platforms and the evaluation of its consequences in the inspection plan. Results show that finite elements analysis is recommended for joints whose type and/or behaviour is not consistent with standard models, used by computational programs. From four analised joints, two of them would not need to be part of inspection plan.

Finite element implementation for the analysis of 3D steel and composite frames subjected to fire.
(2014) Caldas, Rodrigo Barreto; Fakury, Ricardo Hallal; Sousa Junior, João Batista Marques de
This paper presents a finite element formulation for the numerical analysis of three-dimensional framed steel, reinforced concrete or composite steel and concrete structures subjected to fire. Several specialized and commercial programs may be used for the analysis of structures in fire condition. Within this context, the purpose of this work is to present the steps taken to extend a previously developed static analysis procedure with beam elements in order to cope with the thermal and structural analysis of structures under fire action. Physical nonlinearity and material propertydegradation considering the temperature distribution are taken into account at the cross section level, which is divided into quadrilateral or triangular finite elements. Thermal strains are considered through the effective strain concept, and the resulting nonlinear system of equations is solved by the Newton-Raphson scheme. The accuracy and capability of the formulation to simulate the behavior of framed structures under fire action are assessed through comparison with various numerical and experimental results.
