Item Raman, infrared and near-infrared spectroscopic characterization of the herderite-hydroxylherderite mineral series.(2014) Frost, Ray Leslie; Cipriano, Ricardo Augusto Scholz; López, Andrés; Xi, Yunfei; Queiroz, Camila de Siqueira; Belotti, Fernanda Maria; Cândido Filho, MauroNatural single-crystal specimens of the herderite–hydroxylherderite series from Brazil, with general formula CaBePO4(F,OH), were investigated by electron microprobe, Raman, infrared and near-infrared spectroscopies. The minerals occur as secondary products in granitic pegmatites. Herderite and hydroxylherderite minerals show extensive solid solution formation. The Raman spectra of hydroxylherderite are characterized by bands at around 985 and 998 cm_1, assigned to m1 symmetric stretching mode of the HOPO3_ 3 and PO3_ 4 units. Raman bands at around 1085, 1128 and 1138 cm_1 are attributed to both the HOP and PO antisymmetric stretching vibrations. The set of Raman bands observed at 563, 568, 577, 598, 616 and 633 cm_1 are assigned to the m4 out of plane bending modes of the PO4 and H2PO4 units. The OH Raman stretching vibrations of hydroxylherderite were observed ranging from 3626 cm_1 to 3609 cm_1. The infrared stretching vibrations of hydroxylherderites were observed between 3606 cm_1 and 3599 cm_1. By using a Libowitzky type function, hydrogen bond distances based upon the OH stretching bands were calculated. Characteristic NIR bands at around 6961 and 7054 cm_1 were assigned to the first overtone of the fundamental, whilst NIR bands at 10,194 and 10,329 cm_1 are assigned to the second overtone of the fundamental OH stretching vibration. Insight into the structure of the herderite–hydroxylherderite series is assessed by vibrational spectroscopy.Item Denudation rates of the Southern Espinhaço Range, Minas Gerais, Brazil, determined by in situ-produced cosmogenic beryllium-10.(2013) Barreto, Helen Nébias; Varajão, César Augusto Chicarino; Braucher, Régis; Bourlès, Didier Lionel; Salgado, André Augusto Rodrigues; Varajão, Angélica Fortes Drummond ChicarinoTo investigate denudation rates in the southern part of the Espinhaço Range (central-eastern Brazil) and to understand how this important resistant and residual relief has evolved in the past 1.38 My, cosmogenic 10Be concentrations produced in situ were measured in alluvial sediments from the three main regional basins, whose substratum is composed primarily of quartzites. The long-term denudation rates (up to 1.38 My) estimated from these measurements were compared with those that affect the western (São Francisco River) and eastern (Doce and Jequitinhonha Rivers) basins, which face theWest San Francisco craton and the Atlantic, respectively. Denudation rates were measured in 27 samples collected in catchments of different sizes (6–970 km2) and were compared with geomorphic parameters. The mean denudation rates determined in the northern part are low and similar to those determined in the southern part, despite slightly different geomorphic parameter values (catchment relief and mean slope). For the southern catchments, the values are 4.91±1.01 mMy−1 and 3.65±1.26 mMy−1 for the Doce and São Francisco River basins, respectively; for the northern catchments, they are 4.40±1.06 mMy−1 and 3.96±0.91 mMy−1 for the Jequitinhonha and São Francisco River basins, respectively. These low values of denudation rates suggest no direct correlation if plotted against geomorphic parameters such as the catchment area, maximum elevation, catchment relief, average relief and mean slope gradients. These values show that the regional landscape evolves slowly and is strongly controlled by resistant lithology, with similar erosional rates in the three studied basins.Item The molecular structure of the borate mineral rhodizite (K, Cs) Al4Be4(B, Be)12O28 – a vibrational spectroscopic study.(2014) Frost, Ray Leslie; López, Andrés; Xi, Yunfei; Cipriano, Ricardo Augusto Scholz; Souza, Larissa; Lana, Cristiano de CarvalhoWe have studied the borate mineral rhodizite (K, Cs)Al4Be4(B, Be)12O28 using a combination of DEM with EDX and vibrational spectroscopic techniques. The mineral occurs as colorless, gray, yellow to white crystals in the triclinic crystal system. The studied sample is from the Antandrokomby Mine, Sahatany valley, Madagascar. The mineral is prized as a semi-precious jewel. Semi-quantitative chemical composition shows a Al, Ca, borate with minor amounts of K, Mg and Cs. The mineral has a characteristic borate Raman spectrum and bands are assigned to the stretching and bending modes of B, Be and Al. No Raman bands in the OH stretching region were observed.
