Influence of inverted-v-braced system on the stability and strength of multi-story steel frames.
(2023) Azevedo, Iara Santana de; Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da; Silveira, Ricardo Azoubel da Mota
Population growth in urban centers, together with the lack of physical space, has led to the construction of increasingly tall and slender buildings. Multiple-story structures present substantial challenges to civil engineering because they have specific requirements for their design, construction, and use. The increased number of floors leads to more lateral displacements resulting from horizontal actions. Under these conditions, to ensure system stability, structural bracing components are commonly adopted. In addition, along with the use of more resistant materials and new construction techniques, it is necessary to improve the methodologies adopted in the structural analysis to offer professionals in the area the conditions to undertake safer and more economical projects with better speed and efficiency. Thus, in this study, numerical analyses were applied to steel planar reticulated structures to evaluate their stability and strength when inserting bracing systems. The study compared the arrangement of the bars and analyzed the influence of the parameters of the bracing systems, such as the properties of the cross-section and the position of the inverted-V-braced system. The MASTAN2 program was used to perform nonlinear static assessments using reticulated finite elements that considered both geometrical and physical nonlinearities. It was observed that the inverted-V-braced system had a substantial impact on all of the structures that were analyzed, providing increased stiffness and, as a result, significantly reducing the frame’s lateral displacement.

An efficient strategy for solving structural nonlinear equations by combining the orthogonal residual method and normal flow technique.
(2019) Maximiano, Dalilah Pires; Silveira, Ricardo Azoubel da Mota; Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da; Gonçalves, Paulo Batista
This paper presents a new procedure for solving structural nonlinear problems by combining the orthogonal residual method (ORM) and normal flow technique (NFT). The perpendicularity condition to the Davidenko flow, introduced by the NFT, which must be satisfied during the iterative process, overcome the difficulties, i.e. the poor convergence and inefficiency of the ORM close to the limit points, particularly the displacement limit points (snap-back behavior). Basically, the idea of the proposed strategy is to adjust the load parameter, which is treated as a variable in the nonlinear incremental-iterative solution process, assuming that the unbalanced forces (residual forces) must be orthogonal to the incremental displacements. This constraint is used together with the NFT perpendicularity condition. The proposed procedure is tested, and its efficiency is corroborated through the analyses of slender shallow and nonshallow arches and an L-frame since they exhibit highly nonlinear behaviors under certain loading conditions. It is concluded that the proposed procedure can overcome the numerical instability problems in the neighborhood of critical points when using only the conventional OR process, and the procedure compares favorably with the arc-length method, minimum residual displacement method, and generalized displacement control method.

Inelastic second-order analysis of steel columns under minor-axis bending.
(2019) Gonçalves, Gilney Afonso; Silveira, Ricardo Azoubel da Mota; Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da; Silva, Jéssica Lorrany e
The inelastic second-order behavior of steel structural columns under minor-axis bending is presented in this article. To study this behavior, a nonlinear frame element formulation is adopted in which the steel's plasticity process is accompanied at the nodal points of each finite element through the refined plastic-hinge method (RPHM). A tangent modulus approach is employed in order to consider the stiffness degradation in function of the internal forces' variation, and the second-order effects, residual stresses and geometric imperfections are considered in the modeling of column behavior. As a criterium for defining the ultimate limit state of the column cross-section, strength surfaces are adopted. These surfaces describe the interaction between the axial force and bending moment (N-M interaction diagrams). To solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation for the structural system, the Newton-Raphson method is used, coupled with continuation strategies. Columns with different slenderness, boundary and loading conditions are analyzed, and the results obtained are comparable to those found by other researchers. The results lead to the conclusion that the numerical approach adopted in this study can be used for a better behavioral understanding of the steel column under weak-axis bending.

Structural reliability analysis of steel plane frames with semi-rigid connections.
(2018) Agostini, Bruno Márcio; Freitas, Marcílio Sousa da Rocha; Silveira, Ricardo Azoubel da Mota; Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da
The design codes for structural design traditionally establish the adoption of partial safety factors to deal with uncertainties. These standards do not allow one to know the real probabilities of failure of a structure. What is needed, from a practical and scientific point of view, is a more consistent approach, based on reliability theory. This article addresses an initial attempt at determining the safety levels of structures based on advanced analysis and design with structural reliability theory. In this context, the authors consider the effects of the geometric nonlinearity and flexibility of connections in the reliability analysis, which aims at setting a certain displacement as the service limit state. For this purpose, a computer program was written called Structural Reliability Module. This program uses a First Order Reliability Method to analyse reliability. To carry out the structural analysis of steel structures, this study uses the program Computational System for Advanced Structural Analysis. Validating the Structural Reliability Module involved comparing the results from other authors with those generated by the program. Results for the structures under study indicate the efficiency of the implemented measures. Results suggest that, when a certain displacement is set as a service limit state, the reliability of the structures under analysis are only slightly influenced by geometric nonlinearity but considerably so by semi-rigid connections.

On the nonlinear transient analysis of planar steel frames with semi-rigid connections : from fundamentals to algorithms and numerical studies.
(2018) Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da; Batelo, Everton André Pimentel; Neves, Francisco de Assis das; Gonçalves, Paulo Batista
This paper presents the fundamentals for prediction of a more realistic behavior of planar steel frames with semi-rigid connections under dynamic loading. The majority of the research in this area concentrates on the nonlinear static analysis of frames with semi-rigid connections. Indeed, few studies have contributed to the nonlinear dynamic and vibration analyses of frames. Therefore, this article first describes the frames’ semi-rigid connection behavior under monotonic and cyclic loads, and presents the independent hardening technique adopted to simulate the joint behavior under cyclic excitation. In a finite element context, this paper presents an efficient numerical methodology that is proposed in algorithmic form to obtain the nonlinear transient response of the structural system. The paper also presents, in algorithmic form, a complete description of the adopted connection hysteretic model. Satisfying the equilibrium and compatibility conditions, and assuming only the connection’s rotational deformation due to bending as variable, this work obtains the tangent stiffness and mass matrices of the beam-column element with semi-rigid connections at the ends. The study concludes by verifying and validating the proposed numerical approach using four structural steel systems: a L-frame, a two-story frame, a six-story frame, and a four-bay five-story frame. The analyses show that the hysteresis of the semi-rigid connection has a strong effect on the frames’ responses and is an important source of damping during the structural vibration.

Numerical analysis of RC plane structures : a concentrated nonlinear effect approach.
(2018) Lemes, Igor José Mendes; Barros, Rafael Cesário; Silveira, Ricardo Azoubel da Mota; Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da; Rocha, Paulo Anderson Santana
The present work aims to study the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures via Refined Plastic Hinge Method (RPHM). Pseudo-springs are used at the finite element ends, where the gradual loss of stiffness is determined by the combination of the normal force and bending moment (NM) in the cross section. The limiting of the uncracked, elastic and plastic regimes is done in the NM diagram. The concrete cracking is explicitly simulated with two approaches to calculate the effective moment of inertia of the cross section. The displacement-based formulation is referenced to the co-rotational system and coupled with continuation strategies to allow to overcome the possible critical points in the equilibrium paths. For validation of the numerical simulations, the results found with the proposed formulation are confronted with experimental and numerical data present in literature.

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of structures in contact with soil.
(2018) Rosas, Letícia Reis Batista; Silva, Andréa Regina Dias da; Silveira, Ricardo Azoubel da Mota
Structural elements, in many situations, are supported by other surfaces, such as soil, which may offer movement constraints in some directions. Therefore, the static and dynamic analysis of these elements considering their interaction with the soil becomes important in the design of a structural design. This paper presents the nonlinear dynamic analysis of structural systems considering such interaction through the Finite Element Method. A geometrically nonlinear beam-column element is used to model the structure, while the soil can be idealized as a continuum foundation, through the Winkler and Pasternak models. It is assumed that the foundation reacts to tension and compression stresses, so during the deformation process the structural elements are subjected to bilateral contact constraints. The analysis is based on the modeling of the structural system using the finite element method, where the Newmark integration method and Newton-Raphson iterative strategy are used in the process of solving the nonlinear dynamic equations in the time domain. Practical situations involving the interaction between soil and structure were evaluated during the study, showing the influence of contact in the natural vibration frequency and transient response of these structures.
