Item Post-glacial permian debris flow deposits and their paleoclimatic implications (Mariana Pimentel paleovalley, southern Paraná Basin).(2020) Coitinho, Júlia dos Reis; Kern, Henrique Parisi; Cagliari, Joice; Lavina, Ernesto Luiz Correa; Girelli, Tiago Jonatan; Tedesco, Julia; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Silveira, Ariane Santos daThe end of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age was followed by a global warming climate. This climate transition is characterized by, beyond other aspects, a decrease in the intensity of physical weathering, characteristic of arid conditions, and an increase in the intensity of chemical weathering. In the southern Parana ´ Basin, the post-glacial onset and intense record of “Pedra-Areia” diamictite within the Mariana Pimentel paleovalley was likely controlled by warming climate conditions and mark a period of intense rainfall and slope instability. To test this hypothesis, we have performed facies and sequence stratigraphy analysis on cores located within the Mariana Pimentel paleovalley, and U–Pb-Hf investigations to acquire sediment provenance information. Diamictite deposits were produced by debris flow processes, which transported regolith from the valley wall to the bottom, eroding and incorporating mud and peat when reaching the bottom of the valley. The local source of sediment is explained by the sedimentological characteristics of the diamictite and zircon provenance studies. These deposits are preserved within the transgressive system tract and the abundant deposition was controlled by increasing temperature and humidity, and thus the increase in chemical weathering on the walls, forming the regolith. The development of more humid and warmer climatic conditions, contrasting with the cold and dry climate of the glacial period, was an important control over diamictite deposition.Item Stratigraphy and geochronological constraints of the Serra Sul formation (Carajás Basin, Amazonian Craton, Brazil).(2020) Rossignol, Camille Yann; Rego, Eric Siciliano; Narduzzi, Francesco; Teixeira, Lívia; Ávila, Janaína Nunes; Silva, Marco Antônio Leandro; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Philippot, PascalThe Carajás Basin, Amazonian Craton, hosts extensive Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic sedimentary archives, which are still poorly constrained regarding their depositional settings, ages, and type of basin in which they have been deposited. In this study, we performed detailed sedimentological investigations and U-Pb dating of detrital zircon in four drill cores intercepting the recently defined Serra Sul Formation. Our data show that this formation corresponds to various shallow to deep subaqueous environments. Shallow water environments are characterized by local occurrences of microbially-mediated structures, while deep water environments are characterized by polymictic conglomerates resulting from the mixing of materials of different origins during downslope debris flow. Both sedimentary facies and common occurrence of syn-sedimentary deformations attest for recurrent slope instabilities. Geochronological investigations allow to define a maximum depositional age of 2684 ± 10 Ma, that is several tens million years younger than other Neoarchean sedimentary units of the Carajás Basin. Major peaks in age distribution indicate that the Serra Sul Formation derives from local sources that constitute the basement of the Carajás Basin. The infilling of the Carajás Basin by local sources, together with sedimentary facies and depositional environments attesting for slope instabilities, suggest that the Serra Sul Formation was deposited during an active extensional tectonic phase. Such Neoarchean to early Paleoproterozoic tectonic setting compares with those documented in many other cratons worldwide and suggests that it could correspond to the break-up of one of the first documented supercontinent.
