The Santa Lúcia Cu-Au deposit, Carajás Mineral Province, Brazil : a Neoarchean (2.68 Ga) member of the granite-related copper-gold systems of Carajás.
(2021) Hunger, Raphael Bianchi; Melo, Gustavo Henrique Coelho de; Xavier, Roberto Perez; Moreto, Carolina Penteado Natividade; Talavera, Cristina; Su, Zhi-Kun; Zhao, Xin-Fu
The Santa Lúcia copper-gold deposit lies in the southeastern portion of the Carajás Mineral Province, along NW-SE splays of the Carajás Fault. The deposit is hosted by a rhyolitic subvolcanic rock, which is crosscut by pegmatite intrusions. The paragenetic evolution at Santa Lúcia encompasses an early stage of chlorite alteration, followed by potassic alteration with microcline, greisenization (quartz-muscovite-tourmaline), copper-gold ore precipitation, and late sericite and hematite vein formation/ fracture infill. Copper mineralization is dominantly represented by chalcopyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotite-pentlandite-pyrite breccias, which are spatially associated with greisen alteration and characterized by the enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE), Ni, Co, and Cr. The alteration types, mineralization styles, and ore assemblage suggest that the Santa Lúcia deposit could represent a member of the Paleoproterozoic (ca. 1.88 Ga) granite-related copper-gold systems of Carajás (e.g., the Breves and Estrela deposits). However, the in situ U-Pb analyses of ore-related monazite yield a weighted average 207Pb/206Pb age of 2688 ± 27 Ma, thereby constraining the timing of mineralization at Santa Lúcia to the Neoarchean. Moreover, tourmaline from the pegmatite and within the ore zones has a range of δ11B values from − 3.7 to − 0.6‰, therefore linked to a magmatic boron source. Collectively, these results indicate that the Santa Lúcia deposit is the first reduced magmatic-hydrothermal, iron oxide–poor system formed in the Neoarchean, coeval with the 2.72–2.68 Ga metallogenic event responsible for the genesis of important iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposits in the Carajás Mineral Province.

The Neoproterozoic Macaúbas basin (southeast Brazil) provides key hints to unravel the history of the São Francisco – Congo paleocontinent before its amalgamation as part of Gondwana. Among the several Proterozoic taphrogenic events and anorogenic igneous episodes documented for the São Francisco – Congo paleocontinent, Early Tonian event has been particularly focused on in the literature owing to the large production of bimodal (felsic-mafic) magmas now found in the Araçuaí (SE Brazil) – West Congo (SW Africa) orogenic system (AWCO) and neighboring cratonic regions. Aiming to examine the stratigraphic relations, timing and isotopic signatures of extensive basaltic magmatism related to the Macaúbas basin, we carried out detailed field, lithochemical, isotope (whole-rock Sm-Nd and Lu-Hf in zircon) geochemistry and zircon U-Pb geochronological studies on the Pedro Lessa suite and Planalto de Minas Formation, located in the central-western Araçuaí orogen. The studied Pedro Lessa suite consists of a series of mafic dikes that crosscut the lowermost units of the Macaúbas Group but not the Planalto de Minas Formation. The Pedro Lessa suite yielded zircon U-Pb ages between 951 ± 54 Ma and 939 ± 7 Ma. The Planalto de Minas Formation comprises volcaniclastic rocks crystallized at 889 ± 10 Ma, and sedimentary rocks with maximum depositional age of 867 ± 10 Ma. The lithochemical and isotopic datasets (Pedro Lessa dikes: εNd(t) = +0.60; εHf(t) = –22.21 to +4.66; Planalto de Minas volcanism: εNd(t) = +0.76 to +0.78; εHf(t) = − 19.27 to +10.03) indicate predominantly continental tholeiite and minor enriched MORB-type mantle magmas with variable amounts of crustal contamination. The (La/Sm)N ratios indicate a theoretical partial melting (1–7%) of the spinel-lherzoite lithospheric zone for the Pedro Lessa suite, and of the spinel-garnet transition zone (3–10%) for the Planalto de Minas metamafic rocks, in accordance with La/Nb and La/Ba ratios. The new and complied isotopic and lithochemical data suggest a time-dependent evolution of magma sources, with lithospheric mantle sources for the Early Tonian dike swarms (Pedro Lessa and correlatives) evolving to predominantly asthenospheric mantle sources for the late basaltic volcanism recorded in the Planalto de Minas Formation. Such an extensive and long-lasting anorogenic magmatism of Early Tonian age (c. 965 – 870 Ma) found in the AWCO and São Francisco – Congo craton likely records more than one extensional event and related aborted continental rifts, altogether driven by the same mantle plume. Although long-lived, this mantle plume acted beneath a strong continental lithosphere so that it was unable to break up the São Francisco – Congo paleocontinent into two completely separated landmasses. Highlighting the main stages of anorogenic magmatism, we also present an updated barcode for the São Francisco – Congo paleocontinent.

Stratigraphy and geochronological constraints of the Serra Sul formation (Carajás Basin, Amazonian Craton, Brazil).
(2020) Rossignol, Camille Yann; Rego, Eric Siciliano; Narduzzi, Francesco; Teixeira, Lívia; Ávila, Janaína Nunes; Silva, Marco Antônio Leandro; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Philippot, Pascal
The Carajás Basin, Amazonian Craton, hosts extensive Neoarchean to Paleoproterozoic sedimentary archives, which are still poorly constrained regarding their depositional settings, ages, and type of basin in which they have been deposited. In this study, we performed detailed sedimentological investigations and U-Pb dating of detrital zircon in four drill cores intercepting the recently defined Serra Sul Formation. Our data show that this formation corresponds to various shallow to deep subaqueous environments. Shallow water environments are characterized by local occurrences of microbially-mediated structures, while deep water environments are characterized by polymictic conglomerates resulting from the mixing of materials of different origins during downslope debris flow. Both sedimentary facies and common occurrence of syn-sedimentary deformations attest for recurrent slope instabilities. Geochronological investigations allow to define a maximum depositional age of 2684 ± 10 Ma, that is several tens million years younger than other Neoarchean sedimentary units of the Carajás Basin. Major peaks in age distribution indicate that the Serra Sul Formation derives from local sources that constitute the basement of the Carajás Basin. The infilling of the Carajás Basin by local sources, together with sedimentary facies and depositional environments attesting for slope instabilities, suggest that the Serra Sul Formation was deposited during an active extensional tectonic phase. Such Neoarchean to early Paleoproterozoic tectonic setting compares with those documented in many other cratons worldwide and suggests that it could correspond to the break-up of one of the first documented supercontinent.

Paleoenvironment, sediment provenance and tectonic setting of Tonian basal deposits of the Macaúbas basin system, Araçuaí orogen, southeast Brazil.

The Neoproterozoic Macaúbas Group represents the main precursor basin system of the Araçuaí orogen, including a Tonian volcano-sedimentary succession, at the base, overlain by a Cryogenian sequence. Belonging to the Tonian succession, the Matão – Duas Barras Formation, exposed at the southern border of the Porteirinha basement block in the proximal (western) Araçuaí orogen, represents the very first stage of rifting ever recorded in the Macaúbas basin system. Sedimentological analysis on that formation has revealed two distinct and consecutive facies associations, both indicating half-graben sedimentary filling: i) fault-sourced alluvial fans; and ii) fluvial deposits associated with braided rivers. U-Pb ages of detrital zircon grains from the Matão – Duas Barras Formation and its underlain unit (ascribed to the Espinhaço Supergroup) uniformly show a dominant Rhyacian to Orosirian peak at ca. 2182 Ma – 1863 Ma, as well as several minor Archean age peaks from ca. 3186 Ma to ca. 2655 Ma. The Matão – Duas Barras fluvial deposits also show two Mesoproterozoic age clusters at ca. 1520 Ma and ca. 1156 Ma. Together with sedimentological features, the Archean and Paleoproterozoic zircon ages indicate sediment provenance from the granite-gneiss sources located in the neighboring Porteirinha block, which would have acted as a basement high (a large horst) at least during the initial filling of the Early Tonian Macaúbas rift. The ca. 1520 Ma and ca. 1156 Ma peaks are in good agreement with the Calymmian and Stenian development stages (II and III) of the Espinhaço Supergroup, which acted as an important secondary sediment sources for the basal Macaúbas Group. This also suggests that the Mesoproterozoic sources were exposed by the Porteirinha block uplift coeval with the Matão – Duas Barras basin filling. The maximum sedimentary ages given by the youngest zircon grains, together with a thorough literature compilation, bracket a depositional interval for the basal Macaúbas deposits from 1000 Ma to 933 Ma. Changes in sedimentary style and geochronological spectra suggest variations in the tectonic activity and subsidence rates of the Early Tonian Macaúbas basin, marking its first stage as an entirely siliciclastic sedimentation.

Zircon in emplacement borders of post-collisional plutons compared to country rocks : a study on morphology, internal texture, U–Th–Pb geochronology and Hf isotopes (Araçuaí orogen, SE Brazil).
(2020) Araujo, Cristina Santos; Soares, Antônio Carlos Pedrosa; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Dussin, Ivo Antonio; Queiroga, Gláucia Nascimento; Serrano, Paula; Medeiros Júnior, Edgar Batista de
Zircon is a powerful tool to study the internal evolution of igneous bodies and their interactions with country rocks. At pluton borders, zircon may record the emplacement history from the crystallization onset to deuteric processes, as well as inheritance from country rocks. We present a detailed morphology and internal structure study coupled with isotopic analyses (UeThePb and LueHf) on a great number of zircon grains extracted from samples collected at the borders of three distinct post-collisional intrusions of the Araçuaí orogen: granites from the Arace^ e Pedra Azul and Vitoria plutons, and a tonalite from the Mestre Alvaro pluton. For comparison, we also present mineral and bulk-rock chemistry data from these samples of post-collisional intrusions, as well as zircon UePb-Hf data from their country rocks (the Nova Venecia migmatitic paragneisses and Atal eia granites) and a wide dataset compilation. Zircon saturation geothermometry suggests igneous temperatures above 800 C for pluton borders. Zircon geochronology resulted in crystallization ages for borders of the plutons at 523 ± 2 Ma (Arace^ e Pedra Azul), 505 ± 1 Ma (Vitoria), and 527 ± 2 Ma (Mestre Alvaro). Lu eHf data (Arace^ e Pedra Azul pluton: εHf(t) 18.6 to 23.8, TDM ages from 2.25 to 2.47 Ga; Vitoria pluton: εHf(t) 7.4 to 10.3, TDM ages from 1.58 to 1.71 Ga; Mestre Alvaro pluton: εHf(t) 0.7 to 8.8, TDM ages from 1.27 to 1.66 Ga; Nova Venecia migmatitic paragneiss: εHf(t) þ4.1 to 39.2, TDM ages from 1.20 to 3.47 Ga; and Ataleia granite: εHf(t) 3.2 to 8.1, TDM ages from 1.42 to 1.64 Ga) indicate involvement of country rocks in the petrogenesis of post-collisional intrusions. Together, new and compiled data suggest: i) magma hybridization at high temperature, involving country rocks; ii) rapid growth of zircon crystals probably at rapid cooling rates; and iii) in situ dissolutionerecrystallization and overgrowth processes in zircon crystals in response to interactions with residual (late-stage) melts and/or deuteric fluids.

The Diamantina monazite : a new Low‐Th reference material for microanalysis.
(2018) Gonçalves, Guilherme de Oliveira; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Cipriano, Ricardo Augusto Scholz; Buick, Ian S.; Gerdes, Axel; Kamo, Sandra L.; Corfu, Fernando; Rubatto, Daniela; Wiedenbeck, Michael; Nalini Júnior, Hermínio Arias; Oliveira, Luiz Carlos Alves de
Most monazite reference materials (RMs) for in situ U-Pb geochronology are rich in Th; however, many hydrothermal ore deposits contain monazite that is low in trace element contents, including Th, U and Pb. Because of potential problems with matrix effects and the lack of appropriate matrix-matched RMs, such variations can bias dating of hydrothermal deposits. In this paper, we describe a polycrystalline low-U and low-Th Diamantina monazite from the Espinhac o Range, SE Brazil. It has a U-Pb ID-TIMS weighted mean 207Pb*/235U ratio of 0.62913 ± 0.00079, 206Pb*/238U of 0.079861 ± 0.000088 and 207Pb*/206Pb* of 0.057130 ± 0.000031, yielding a weighted mean 206Pb*/238U date of 495.26 ± 0.54 Ma (95% c.l.). In situ dates acquired with different methods (LA-(Q, SF, MC)-ICP-MS and SIMS) are within uncertainty of the ID-TIMS data. U-Pb LA-(Q, MC)-ICP-MS runs, using Diamantina as a primary RM, reproduced the ages of other established RMs within < 1% deviation. The LA-MC-ICP-MS analyses yielded homogeneous Sm-Nd isotopic compositions (143Nd/144Nd = 0.511427 ± 23, 2s; 147Sm/144Nd = 0.1177 ± 13, 2s) and eNd(495 Ma) of -18.7 ± 0.5 (2s). SIMS oxygen isotope determinations showed measurement reproducibility better than ± 0.3‰ (2s), confirming Diamantina’s relative homogeneity at test portion masses below 1 ng.

São Francisco–Congo Craton break-up delimited by U–Pb–Hf isotopes and trace-elements of zircon from metasediments of the Araçuaí Belt.
(2018) Schannor, Mathias; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Fonseca, Marco Antônio
Detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology combined with Hf isotopic and trace element data from metasedimentary rocks of the Araçuaí Belt in southeastern Brazil provide evidence for break-up of the Congo–São Francisco Craton. The U–Pb age spectra of detrital zircons from metasediments of the Rio Doce Group (RDG) range from 900–650 Ma and define a maximum depositional age of ca. 650 Ma. Zircon trace element and whole rock data constrain an oceanic island arc as source for the deposition setting of the protoliths to the metasediments. Zircon εHf(t) values from these rocks are positive between +1 and +15, supporting previous evidence of a Neoproterozoic extensional phase and oceanic crust formation in a precursor basin to the Araçuaí Belt. Recrystallization of detrital zircon at ca. 630 Ma is compatible with a regional metamorphic event associated with terrane accretion to the Paleoproterozoic basement after transition from an extensional to a convergent regime. The juvenile nature, age spectra and trace element composition recorded in detrital zircons of metasediments from the Araçuaí Belt correspond with zircons from metasedimentary rocks and oceanic crust remnants of other orogenic belts to its south. This suggests that rifting and oceanic crust formation of the entire orogenic system, the so-called Mantiqueira Province, was contemporaneous, most likely related to the opening of a large ocean. It further indicates that the cratonic blocks involved in the orogenic evolution of the Mantiqueira Province were spatially connected as early as 900 Ma.

Stabilization of the southern portion of the São Francisco craton, SE Brazil, through a long-lived period of potassic magmatism.
(2012) Romano, Rafael Cotta; Lana, Cristiano de Carvalho; Alkmim, Fernando Flecha de; Stevens, Gary; Armstrong, Richard
Although the southernportion of the SãoFranciscocraton in southeast Brazil encompasses one of the largest segments of Meso- to Neoarchaean crust in the South American plate, there is little understanding of the processes leading to cratonization of this region. Our combined field and U-Pb age data show that the crust experienced massive intrusions of potassic (K-rich) granitoids between 2750 and 2600 Ma, and that this magmatic event marked the beginning of a fundamental change in the tectonics of the terrain, with the ensuing billion years being dominated by the deposition of a series of thick clastic and chemical sedimentary successions. Thus, deep crustal partial melting and subsequent transport and intrusion of these granites in the upper crust is a likely mechanism by which this segment of the SãoFrancisco crust attained buoyancy to survive recycling. Regional mapping indicates that the potassic granitoids are distributed over an area of ∼25000 km2, and are related to one of the most prolific periods of potassicmagmatism in the craton. LA-ICP-MS and SHRIMP U-Pb data from 16 samples of potassic granitoids together with published TIMS ages suggest alonglivedperiod of magmatism from 2750 to 2700 Ma, and a small pulse of granite crystallisation at ca. 2612 Ma. The U-Pb SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS data also indicate that the Archaean granitoids do not record evidence of U-Pb zircon resetting. Our interpretation is that partial melting and transport of granitoid melts (rich in heat producing elements) to the upper crust gave rise to a thermally stable lower crust and that this lower crustal segment (in the craton area) became sufficiently refractory and resistant to further partial melting.
