Information science and agricultural land suitability : interscalar approaches for land use planning.
(2015) Vasconcelos, Vitor Vieira; Martins Júnior, Paulo Pereira
Technical and methodological innovations in programming, network sharing, information system analysis and geographic information systems (GIS) have enabled the representation, storage, processing and dissemination of information that was previously unavailable to interested parties. In this context, this study presents a proposal for the conceptual modeling of the integrated use of agricultural land suitability methods to develop support systems for land use decision-making information science methods. Knowledge-based modeling diagrams are structured using CommonKADS and Unified Modeling Language (UML) methods to simulate the processing of basic questions from farmers, including “what to plant”, “where to plant”, and “how to plant”. Finally, an interdisciplinary matrix, which explains the relationship between crop-specific agricultural land suitability and soil and terrain attributes to support decision-making at a detailed scale, is presented. The proposed system is an effective instrument for agricultural and environmental guidance and education because it provides environmentally sustainable alternatives to the user and explains the economic rationale for such proposals.

A Life Cycle Assessment study of iron ore mining.
(2015) Ferreira, Hélio; Leite, Mariangela Garcia Praça
This paper assessed the cradle-to-gate life cycle of an iron ore mining. The study was based on production data from an open pit mine located in the Iron Quadrangle/Brazil. The functional unit was defined as “one tonne of iron ore concentrate produced” and the data used were collected directly from the company's production reports covering the time of one year. The evaluation included the classification and characterization of life cycle impacts, not including normalization and weighting as well as sensitivity analysis of results. The evaluation of impacts used SimaPro-7, Ecoinvent 2.0, Eco indicator'99 and IPCC 2007. The results indicated that the use of grinding media in the processes is the main source of environmental impacts in the iron ore production chain, highlighting its contribution to life cycle impacts on human health and quality of ecosystems. Ore transportation by conveyor belts powered by electricity was more efficient in relation to the generation of impacts on the abiotic resources depletion and on climate changes than ore transportation by diesel trucks because the electricity generation matrix in Brazil has significant participation from hydroelectric plants.

Hydrographic and hydrogeological Basin of Entre-Ribeiros : probable recharge zone delimitation and environmental impact assessment.
(2012) Vasconcelos, Vitor Vieira; Martins Júnior, Paulo Pereira; Hadad, Renato Moreira

Aquifer recharge : epistemology and interdisciplinarity.
(2013) Vasconcelos, Vitor Vieira; Martins Júnior, Paulo Pereira; Hadad, Renato Moreira; Koontanakulvong, Sucharit
The environmental issues related to aquifer recharge and discharge present challenges that require an interdisciplinary approach. This paper reports an epistemological study on the contribution of different fields of knowledge to the research on hydrogeological processes. The study is based on the hypothesis that this dialog is essential to the resolution of current and future environmental problems, including those related to water use. The first proposition is to discuss epistemological and information management approaches that may contribute to a better spatial, qualitative and quantitative characterization of aquifer recharge. Preliminary conceptual models are developed to demonstrate the possibilities of interdisciplinary collaboration to solve the environmental issues presented here. The paper concludes with a discussion of the possibilities of incorporating knowledge on aquifer recharge into environmental and water resources policies.
