Item Affiliative stimuli as primers to prosocial predispositions.(2012) Souza, Gabriela Guerra Leal de; Pereira, Mirtes Garcia; Vila, Jaime; Oliveira, Letícia de; Volchan, ElianeAffiliative stimuli are pleasant and highly biologically relevant. Affiliative cues are thought to elicit a prosocial predisposition. Here affiliative and neutral pictures were exposed prior to a reaction time task which consisted in responding to a visual target. Half the participants responded with finger-flexion, a movement frequently involved in prosocial activities. The other half responded with finger extension, a less prosocially compatible movement. Results showed that under the exposure to affiliative pictures, as compared to neutral ones, participants who used finger flexion were faster, while those using finger extension were slower. Performance benefits to the task, when flexing the finger, together with performance costs, when extending it, indicate the relevance of movement compatibility to the context. These findings put forward a possible link between affiliative primers and motor preparation to facilitate a repertoire of movements related to prosocial predispositions including finger flexion.Item Emotionally subjective reactivity to cervical cytology pictures is modulated by expertise.(2022) Oliveira, Jacqueline Alfenas de; Souza, Miriam de Cássia; Cunha, Laila Fernandes da; Mota, Bruna Eugênia Ferreira; Rezende, Mariana Trevisan; Carneiro, Cláudia Martins; Pereira, Mirtes Garcia; Mocaiber, Izabela; Souza, Gabriela Guerra Leal deOur aims were to create a catalog of cytological pictures and to evaluate the valence (level of pleasantness/ unpleasantness) and arousal (level of calm/excitement) of these pictures in individuals with different occupations. The sample consisted of medical and law college students and cytopathologists. Valence and arousal score for general pictures were not modulated by expertise in cytology. However, students judged the cytological pictures to be lower in valence and in arousal than the cytopathologists. The cytopathologists classified cytological pictures with lesions as lower in valence and higher in arousal than cytological pictures without lesions.Item Exposure to trauma-relevant pictures is associated with tachycardia in victims who had experienced an intense peritraumatic defensive response : the tonic immobility.(2014) Alves, Rita de Cassia Silva; Portugal, Liana Catarina Lima; Fernandes Junior, Orlando; Mocaiber, Izabela; Souza, Gabriela Guerra Leal de; David, Isabel de Paula Antunes; Volchan, Eliane; Oliveira, Letícia de; Pereira, Mirtes GarciaTonic immobility is an involuntary, last-ditch defensive reaction characterized by physical inactivity in a context of inescapable threat that has been described in many species, including humans. The occurrence of this defensive response is a predictor of the severity of psychiatric disorders and may be considered as an index of an intense reaction to a traumatic event. Here, we investigated whether the retrospective reports of peritraumatic tonic immobility reaction in participants exposed to a traumatic event would modify their cardiac responses to pictures related to their trauma. Using a questionnaire of life-threating events, we selected students who experienced violent crime as their most intense trauma and students who had never experienced a violent crime trauma, but experienced other traumatic events. All participants completed a questionnaire that estimated the intensity of tonic immobility during their most intense trauma. Electrocardiographic recordings were collected during exposure to pictures. Participants viewed emotional pictures (human attack with guns) and neutral pictures. These emotional stimuli were selected to be trauma-relevant to the violent crime group and non trauma-relevant to the no violent crime trauma group. Violent crime group showed a positive correlation between heart rate changes after viewing trauma-related pictures and tonic immobility scores. We observed that low tonic immobility scores were associated with bradycardia and high scores with tachycardia in response to trauma-relevant pictures. For the no violent crime group, no significant correlation was detected. These results suggest that the relevance of the stimuli and the magnitude of the defensive response during a previous trauma event were important factors triggering more intense defensive responses.Item The different impacts of COVID-19 on the mental health of distinct health care worker categories.(2022) Machado, Arthur Viana; Gonçalves, Raquel Menezes; Gama, Camila Monteiro Fabricio; Vilete, Liliane Maria Pereira; Berger, William; Passos, Roberta Benitez Freitas; Mendlowicz, Mauro Vito; Souza, Gabriela Guerra Leal de; Pereira, Mirtes Garcia; Mocaiber, Izabela; Oliveira, Letícia deThe present study sought to explore the factors associated with the odds of having probable depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to traumatic COVID-19 experiences and their impact on health care workers in distinct categories. In this cross-sectional study, 1843 health care workers (nurses, nurse technicians, physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare workers) were recruited via convenience sampling. A survey was administered to obtain information regarding sociodemographic, occupational, and mental health status. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression were used for the analyses. Being a nurse technician was associated with an odds ratio of 1.76 for probable PTSD. No relation was observed between health care worker categories and the odds of probable depression. Additionally, being female and not receiving adequate PPE were related to greater odds of having probable PTSD and depression. Item Ultra-processed foods elicit higher approach motivation than unprocessed and minimally processed foods.(2022) Lemos, Thayane Castro Carvalho; Coutinho, Guilherme Macedo Soares; Silva, Laiz A. A.; Stariolo, Jasmin Bruna; Campagnoli, Rafaela Ramos; Cardoso, Leticia de Oliveira; Pereira, Mirtes Garcia; Mota, Bruna Eugênia Ferreira; Souza, Gabriela Guerra Leal de; Canella, Daniela Silva; Khandpur, Neha; David, Isabel de Paula AntunesBackground: Ultra-processed foods (UPF) are becoming extensively available in the food environments. UPF are industrial formulations that are designed to maximize palatability and consumption through a combination of calorie-dense ingredients and chemical additives. UPFs are also aggressively marketed, which may make them more attractive than unprocessed/minimally processed foods (UMPF). Since consumers’ purchase decisions are guided by food-evoked emotions, we aimed to provide evidence that UPF visual cues trigger higher emotional responses and approach motivation than UMPF visual cues, with potential impacts on individuals’ intention to consume the UPF over the UMPF. Methods: Participants (n = 174; 144 women; mean age = 20.7 years; standard deviation = 4.35) performed two tasks. In the first task, 16 pictures of foods (8 UPF and 8 UMPF), and 74 pictures from other affective categories, were presented. After viewing each picture, the participants rated it along two basic dimensions of emotion through the Self-Assessment Manikin scale: pleasantness and arousal. In the second task, the participants viewed the same food pictures, and they rated their intention to consume the foods depicted in the pictures. Each picture was plotted in terms of its mean pleasantness and arousal ratings in a Cartesian plane, which resulted in an affective space. Results: Pictures of UPF and UMPF were positioned in the upper arm of the boomerang-shaped affective space that represents approach motivation. Pictures containing UPF triggered higher approach motivation and intention to consume than pictures containing UMPF. We also found a stronger association between emotional responses and intention to consume UPF relative to UMPF.Conclusion: These results shed new light on the role of ultra-processed foods evoked emotions that contribute to less healthy and sustainable food environments.
