Tal substância é um organofosforado com período de meia/vida de 3 a 6 dias. Após esse período, ele é convertido em metamidofós. Estudos relacionam ambas as substâncias com sintomas de toxicidade aguda, genotoxicidade, neurotoxicidade e toxicidade reprodutiva. A União Europeia proíbe tolera a detecção de ambos em água potável na concentração máxima de 0,1 μg/L. Entretanto, no Brasil, foi recentemente definido um valor máximo permitido (VMP) deste composto e do metamidofós em 7 μg/L. Percebe-se, que há necessidade de estudos que analisem a exposição e metabolização deste composto em água, uma vez que, no Brasil, o acefato é muito utilizado, e apresenta poucos estudos relatando sua biotransformação em animais aquáticos e possíveis biomarcadores de exposição. Neste sentido, Zebrafish (Danio rerio) tem se tornado um bom modelo animal para avaliação da toxicidade, principalmente por ser um organismo com anatomia, fisiologia e desenvolvimento similares a vertebrados superiores; por proporcionar ensaios rápidos e baratos e por absorver facilmente substâncias presentes na água. Desta forma, este trabalho avaliou amostras de água dos aquários contendo acefato a 200 μg/L, e amostras de fígados dos zebrafish expostos ao acefato e ao metamidofós na concentração final de 100 μg/L. As amostras foram analisadas por cromatografia líquida acoplada à espectrometria de massa de alta resolução, utilizado a abordagem metabolômica, seguida de análises estatísticas multivariadas e univariadas. Os resultados sugeriram os metabólitos O,S- dimetilfosfotioato, monometilfosfato e O,O,S-trimetil fosforotioato como potenciais biomarcadores da exposição ao acefato. Além disso, foram detectadas alterações metabólicas endógenas no fígado dos animais exposto ao acefato e ao metamidofós, demostrando alterações no organismo dos animais. Portanto, espera-se que o presente estudo auxilie o monitoramento de órgãos governamentais na detecção do acefato a partir dos biomarcadores encontrados e, em mais estudos de toxicidade dos metabólitos encontrados.
